DocumenTANGO: Capturing the Creative Energy
— Four True Stories on Argentine Tango
This documentary series is an invitation—a cinematic doorway into the soul of tango. We celebrate the richness of Argentine tango through the lens of four unique films and their passionate creators. Each film opens a different window into the tango universe—into its history, its instruments, its voices, and its deeply human stories. We begin where so many tango stories begin: with Gardel. Music. Love and respect. Pugliese. And the ongoing search for connection.
The series opens with OSVALDO (2024), a bold and collective road movie that travels 35,000 kilometers across Argentina to trace the living legacy of maestro Osvaldo Pugliese. Directors Viveka Cáceres and Nicolás Artín weave music, movement, and memory into a vibrant portrait of a national icon, revealing how his influence pulses through generations of contemporary artists.
From there, we move into more intimate spaces. In EL SONIDO DE ANTES (Eng: The Hidden Sound of Tango, 2023), director Yael Szmulewicz follows musician and guitar collector Patricio Crom on a journey to revive the sound of the past—quite literally—through the restoration of an instrument believed to echo Gardel’s own. The film vibrates with tactile devotion and musical reverence, and like Szmulewicz’s own method of filmmaking, it unfolds with discovery, trust, and deep emotional texture.
In AMAR AMANDO (2018), Szmulewicz again turns her camera toward passion—this time capturing the surprising, late-in-life artistic blossoming of Nidia Temporelli. Through her relationship with singer Juan Villarreal, we are reminded that the creative spark knows no age, and that tango—as music and as connection—can transform lives at any moment.
Finally, LOCOS POR EL TANGO (NL: In de greep van de tango, Eng: Embraced by Tango, 1991) offers a cross-cultural encounter filled with warmth and curiosity, as Dutch bandoneonist Carel Kraayenhof travels to Buenos Aires at the invitation of Osvaldo Pugliese. What begins as a musical homage becomes a heartfelt journey of friendship and artistic exchange, bridging worlds through the shared language of tango.
Together, these films explore tango not just as a style of music or dance, but as a way of being. Through restored instruments, rediscovered voices, and heartfelt portraits of musicians, dancers, and seekers, this series invites audiences in Sweden to connect with Argentina’s deep cultural memory—past, present, and future. These are not just films for tango lovers, but for anyone moved by music, human connection, and the creative spirit.
DocumenTANGO is organised in collaboration with Tango Norte, as part of Stockholm Pugliese Weekend 2025.
